News: Tom Hanks Eyes New Project with ‘Greyhound’

Written by on September 11

The opening numbers for the Clint Eastwood-directed Sully shows once again that audiences like Tom Hanks behind the wheel of most any passenger vehicle, whether it’s a jetliner or a cargo ship like he steered in Captain Phillips. He is eyeing another big vehicle. He’s more then eyeing it, he wrote the script. I’m told that Hanks has written and hopes to star in Greyhound, a World War II drama that Get Low helmer Aaron Schneider will direct. Hanks’ Playtone partner Gary Goetzman will produce.

Now, this isn’t the prototypical hero Hanks wants to play. He’s a career officer finally given command of a Navy destroyer, who along with the enemy fights his self doubts and personal demons to prove he belongs. The title comes from the battleship. The project is still coming together, and is in talks to be funded by FilmNation, whose principal, Glen Basner, didn’t return emails. This is probably not a deal for this Toronto festival, but the two big deals here so far were both pre-sales so who knows? The budget is in the mid-30 million range. [Source]
